toshiba hd-e1 to launch in uk november
hd dvd is the only next gen dvd, so, cheaper to produce... why do we want
bluray at inflated prices? how can samsung say they will win the format war
when their bluray player is nearly twice the price of the toshiba hd-dvd
player... and what are they offering for the extra money??.. oh, I know... a
bit more disc space (needed to house the extra capacity used by inferior
mpeg 2 video codec), and 1080p, wow, how many people in the uk actually have
a 1080p screen!!

You need to look at things over the long term, technology changes very
quickly. We have an explosion of hd televisions over the last twelve months,
which are now the price of sd screens the same time the year before.

The dvd format, as a mass market product only hit the big time post yr2000,
and it has at least another five years of life left in it.

The post dvd companies will be anticipating (or hoping) for a ten year
turnaround on the new formats.

In five years time 720p will be standard for new tv purchases, and 1080p
will be common...

I suspect that neither hddvd or blueray are going to take off for a few
years yet, as the mass market wont be able to tell the difference, between
them and DVD.

There won't be a market for pre-recorded videos in few years time which is
why they're trying to flog us HD now.

1080p output is a no brainer - any hd dvd or bluray player that wont do it
is very short sighted - given that it's how the films are stored on the
disc.

Anyone remember the 'trolls' that Philips alledgedly sponsored to promote
their DVD+RW format when it first came out? This seems very similar...
