Do sky offer any deals or incentives to try and keep you as an existing
customer??
I have had the full Sports and Movies Sky package for about 10 years now
(loyal Sky customer, etc). I've never bothered with Sky+ and I've just
bought a HDD/DVD recorder, so am not too fussed about getting Sky+ in future
either. What I'd like to do is reduce my existing bill, which is the full
£42.99 a month without dropping too many services. Ideally, I'd drop the
Movies, keep Sports and the basic channel packages, but this only gets it to
about £36 from what I can see.
Alternative is to try to get a cheaper deal alongside my existing ntl
phone/cable package. This is not my preferred option but I reckon I could
get something significantly cheaper if I moved from sky to ntl.
Any advice or anyone's previous experiences of negotiating the price down
appreciated.
cheers

I had cable TV through NTL's sister company Blueyonder - It was utter shite!

Basic package was cheaper (cant remember costs now) but to add prem channels
like sports or movies it was a ridiclous ammount, The box was buggier than
a cockroach convention and the customer service sucked big time.

The only thing Blueyonder actually got right was my 4Mb internet (and that
was ropey at times)

I'd stick with sky any-day.

Blueyonder = Telewest. Nothing to do with NTL (pending merger)

> Basic package was cheaper (cant remember costs now)

£5.50 a month for a package including Sky One, UK TV Gold, More4.

£15.50 for best package (equivalent to Sky £21 pack)

> but to add prem channels like sports or movies it was a ridiclous ammount,

£25.50/mth for sports + movies.

£25.50 + £15.50 = £41 /mth

Sky cost? £42.50

So much cheaper if you don't want movies/sport, a little cheaper if you
do.

Absolutly correct - Personally speaking tho having had experience of
Nottingham NTL, Southport Telewest/Blueyonder and Sky - I wouldnt touch
either of the cable providers with a 10 foot cattle prod.

BTW this taken from site :- ? All TV packages must be taken with a Telewest
phone service starting from an additional £10.50 a month.

If you have a BT line (as the vast majority of people do), then the
£10.50 cost is the same as BT, and you can port your number

Sky is cheaper *only* if you don't have and don't want a landline. This
is a minority market.

Or have Top package ( inc Sports + films) + Multiroom
Then the additional £15 for a TW additional box makes TW more expensive

Extra Telewest box is actually £9.50/mth.

So slightly cheaper as well.

Only £ 9.50 for new customers ( Maybe ) ,the TW site quotes both firgures in
different places
My outlay ( after discounts worked there way out ) dropped by some some £5
PM when I changed to SKY also more useful ( and unuseful) channels and the
addition of a PVR at no cost !

I got the Sports package for 50%, initially for six months, and whenever I
phoned to end it they would mention the fact that I had been a customer for
such a long time that it would be a shame to lose me:-). They then offered
to extend the offer for another couple of months, then another and
another... Ended up on it for just over a year:-)
Seems if you are a long standing customer they will make you an offer - Just
tell them you only really watch the sports now and that your out of work or
on short term contracts or something.

I had the full package for years. I rang them to cancel movies as I don't
watch over the summer months. They reduced my bill to £36 per month and
gave me the even numbers of sky movies for free so I get sm2,4,6 and 8 for
free.

Sure, if you don't mind the far higher call costs on cable.

Example: Two hour daytime call via BT with 18866 - 3p

Two hour daytime call via Telewest (because you can't access other
telephone providers on cable) - £4.86.

You can access 18866 on cable

not as simply as with BT but I use it all the time for other than local
calls

Bryce

You certainly can. I have been using 18866 on Telewest since I signed
up 11 months ago. There is an freephone number to dial, which is stored
in my phone.

I pay the same as anyone else using 18866.
