Billboard launches new look Hot 100
04 February 2005 - 14:39:08

Billboard has overhauled the compilation of its weekly Hot 100 chart by
incorporating digital data for the first time.

Digital sales, which are already supplied by Nielsen SoundScan for
Billboard¢s Hot Digital Sales chart, will now be tallied with sales of
physical singles and airplay information supplied by Nielsen Broadcast Data
Systems to make up a new-look Hot 100 chart.

The Billboard move pre-empts one in the UK where digital data is expected
to be added to the Official Singles Chart during the first half of this
year.

In addition, Billboard has expanded the Hot Digital Songs countdown from 50
to 75 titles, while a new Pop 100 chart has been launched, which will also
combine airplay, digital and physical sales but the radio panel will be
confined to Top 40 stations.

The new Pop 100 chart is headed by Ciara¢s 1,2 Step with the number two
slot filled by Green Day¢s Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, which heads the
newly-extended digital-only chart. Other artists appearing in the Top 10 of
this week¢s digital chart include Kelly Clarkson, The Game and the Killers.

Must admit I didn't notice the unusual Hot 100 moves initially, but on
closer inspection you can tell *something* has changed.

Both Green Day & U2 climbed significantly, and we know from our own
download chart that they have good virtual sales.
