I hope it's useful for those who seem to use their laptops outside a lot. |

When I was recording MIs from my rellies' headstones I treated them like brass rubbings - sheets of A3 paper, sometimes even A2, and a heelball that I got from a friendly cobbler and away I went! It's so much easier now with digital cameras. Sticks of different coloured chalks come in handy if any of the lettering needs enhancing. |

Chalk is supposed to be a bad thing to use as it can permanently stain the headstone. The recommended way is to use a torch or lamp and to shine the light (no, that's not a cue of a song ;)) ) at an angle across the stone. A mirror is also useful for reflecting the light. There are two headstones in Walton (Street) that I can't read easily. The lettering is very worn but it is there. I've just got to find the time to get there again. |

I always wash it off as soon as my work is done, so I don't think it'll do much damage. |
