I think the main reason is down to the internet. RTD and the United Nations
are well aware that Dr Who has many internet sites. If Dr Who kept the name
"United Nations Intelligence Taskforce", what do you think will happen if
anyone types United Nations into Google?

Me too.
It's the best show of the last couple of decades.

Shushhhhhh, don't tell everyone! It's embarrassing enough admitting to
having watched Dr Who :o)

I think it's simpler. Merchandising. If you were the UN, would you
want the BBC making money selling toys with your name on them?

I was getting a portion of the profits - why not? Besides, the acronym is
still UNIT whether you want to call it "United" or "Unified"

RTD "brought back" characters that weren't even in the series to begin-with!
(Gwen, Llanto and Robert).

That was explained in the audio commentaries if not in DW Confidential. It
had originally been intended to be a much bigger sequence with Slitheen and
Sontarans but was cut right back for budgetary reasons. As far as I could
tell it was totally irrelevant to the main story in any case along with
UNIT, Torchwood and Sarah-Jane.

You're an organisation set up to promote peace between nations. Do you
really want to profit from wartoys?

And yes, I know the acronym has been retconned.

I don't know. I don't work for the UN and couldn't speak for them. They
didn't seem to have a massive objection back in the 1970s. Or the 1980s for
that matter.

Maybe merchandise is an issue. I still think that the main issue is the
internet, and for the reasons I've already stated.

Has an official reason for the name change ever actually be given? For all
we know, the UN didn't object and the name change was completely down to
RTD.

Yes during the audio commentary for "Sontaran Strategem" Helen Raynor says
that objections were voiced and she decided to change the name to avoid a
possible confrontation.

I don't think Auntie Beeb was quite as tuned in to merchandising
rights back then. Or maybe the UN wasn't.

Perhaps, but I can't really see it being an issue. There are ways
around googlebombs, whether they're intentional or not.

Wiki give the source of the UN complaint story as a DWM interview with
RTD

There's an article about it here...
