anyone else having such?

it could be this end, or it could be a co-inicdental borkedness at V21...

last night, some stuff was findable, some wasn't.

this morning nothing can be found, buggrit.

alternatively, anyone know how to check if me XP thing is actually
connecting pbeerpgyl?

currently the TCP/IP is set to "auto IP address" and "auto DNS address",
which jbexed before on 98SE, with all compression turned off. The actual
connection jbexf fine, just it doesn't find any names...

hopefully this will go out OK on account of I told Agent the number for cis.

arrrgh. I can see me reverting to 98 *again*, at this rate, grrr...

bloody silly thing is that when I installed a new incarnation of XP, rather
than upgrading, it *seemed* to jbex - but then again, I didn't test
*everything*.

boodly right it could.

reverted to 98 again and everything hunky-dory.

anyone got any ideas WTF XP can't seem to run a simple boodly nameserver?

grah.

halfway inclined to leave it running 98, at this rate, except that I KNOW it
will prove to be some simple, footling silly problem that sodding windows
CBA to tell me about.

tried looking in the help and the troubleshooters, more for amusement than
in any expectation that there'd actually be hfrshy info therein, so that was
a good thing as I wasn't disappointed when there wasn't.

I suppose I could look up the nameserver addresses and put 'em in manually.
But I bet the sod would still not jbex.

Xp has a built in firewall. Is it possible that it was blocking ports 42,
53, 1023/1024 (whathaveyou) ?

If you find several other DNS swervers and stab their addresses in the
alternates bit of XP's DNS setup, then if it experiences prombles it
tries all of them. Mine's set up to refer to the router first (gets
ntl's automagically) and then Freeswerves. After the ntl borkedness
last week it was still finding addresses. lBooyd computers.

turned off, since I use ZoneAlarm. Or at least, it was *meant* to be turned
off.

but how the hell it could work if it blocks nameservers, I dunno. Only
option I saw for it was "on or off" - it may be that one can tune it.

I may try that. Buggrit. I don't want both OS on the machine, and it takes
over an hour to convert to XP and about 10 minutes to remove it again when
it won't fecking jbex.

put both on the chamine upstairs, and there's no obvious way to remove W98
afterwards.

Sory, I got the idea you were running the nameserver on the XP machine,
rather than failing to find it from the XP machine.
