yeah, that's where I started - you can get the satellite images from the
site above as overlays, but they're not actually in GE unless you import
'em.

There's no explanation of what's happening and why.

From [1] "a long-term solution could involve putting the mud to
commercial use in a health resort" that's a feck of a lot of face-packs.

mud. in large amounts, and apparently without end.

It's been alleged, with some degree of accuracy, that exploratory gas/oil
drilling triggered it off. presumably, eventually, it'll stop of its own
accord and I found one site which claims they're trying to drill down to the
source and inject concrete to block it. Not sure that's not just going to
make another mud-vent.

googling for suitable search terms will bring up several news reports from
2006 when it started.

Does one find many hippos in Java?

Ah, right. It's a mud volcano, not a mud slide. That'll explain why I
couldn't reconcile what I saw on the pictures.

None. They have rhinocerose on Sumatera, but I don't know whether they
still exist on Java; and in any case, I don't goove rhinocerose consider
mud to be glorious. AIUI even the African ones prefer dust, and the
Asian ones are jungle creatures. Leaves, leaves, glorious leaves just
doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?
