I had been asked recently my someone wanting to install a wind turbine what
the average wind speed was at my station. This is something I had really
recorded before, but there is a web site where you can input your grid
reference and it tells you the average speed

I wondered if anyone else had come across this and also wondered how
accurate is it likely to be

many thanks

Probably not that accurate. This part of Norfolk is particularly popular
with Turbine operators for some reason - and although you can get
average speeds on a postcode basis, that doesn't seem to stop them from
putting up survey poles (basically 200' masts with an anemometer at the
top) for a couple of years before they apply for planning permission.

Cycling around the countryside here, it's interesting just how many of
these masts you see...

Plugged in the 4 figure reference for here and it came back with
4.5m/s at 45m (10mph at 150') or 3.3m/s at 10m (7.3mph at 33').

GDF comes back at 12.1m/s at 45m (27mph) with no great difference with
height above ground level.

Mount Hooley: 7.6m/s (17mph) down to 6.3m/s (14mph).

So for *average* over a longish time span I'd say that the figures are
not that far from the mark but bear in mind that they are using a 1km
square so local topography could be very influencial and these are
averages, GDF can reach F11 with gusts 80 to 90mph. Storm conditions
also need to be taken into account lest they break your turbine...
