Prombles with the AP's PC:

The mouse (standard PS2) intermitttently stops responding. Pointer
won't move, clicks don't do anything. I can sometimes get "phantom"
mouse clicks (guess where the invisible pointer is and click
hopefully). I've swapped it for a known good USB one, without
improvement. And the PS2 is working fine on this machine.

System is XP Home, SP2. half a gig of RAM.

As the problems only started after he hooked up to Orange ADSL I'm
inclined to think it's some crap program that the install disk put on.
I've uninstalled the Orange toolbar and the router program (I can
access that from a browser window). I've run Regcleaner to get rid of
unwanted registry entries.

What now?

(changing OS is not really an option)

Quick & easy things to try. Change the mouse pointer scheme in control
panel if that's possible. The one in use may be corrupt.

Or use a system restore point if one's available to restore the state
before the Orange software was installed.

Dunno, but mine recently started doing the same - mouse locks for
several seconds at a time. There's no evidence of disc activity or net
traffic while it happens - just locks and comes back in a bit.

That's why I mentioned that there's no net traffic when it happens.

Sounds liek somethign in the ADSL is nickign the interrupts. In the days
before windows we'd have told one or t'other to use a different IRQ but
I dunno if you can now!

Half a gig's about the min for XP, the ADSL may be causing a lot of
paging, if you can disabkle it wiothout uninstallign, see if that makes
the troubel go away.

No. I can navigate around with a selection of keyboard strokes (alt
this, tab, arrows ect ect).

Nah, it's Squid's keyboard the cat sits on, not mine.

I used to go through two or three meece every year. Symptoms were as
described. Sometimes it was muck on the little rollers and sometimes the
lead cracked just inside the mouse. They were only three or four quid so I
didn't expect much else. Right now I'm using a ten-year-old Compaq mouse
from an old 486. It's been working for so long that I suspect that build
quality must have been better ten years ago.
