And a six-inch (or so) ( I don't like to brag) slide rule, in a leather case with two scale rules (one of which I still have (somewhere)). Serpently we didn't have any of these electric thingies (battery OR mains). A few years after I left school I visited the alma mater (at a nopen day/evening) and the back end of one of the classrooms had been partitionèd off and been fittèd with some sort of pewter terminals connectèd, I goove, to the Technical College - all punchèd tape type technology. I'd noticed that the battery didn't hold a charge too well - mine tends to get used every now and then for many hours (on mains) then not very much for a week or so - it always seems to be on half (or less) battery after a week of being switched off, despite being fully charged after the mains session. Can't think of anything that would discharge a plugged-in battery on a switched-off loptap... Will try the battery removal thing next time it's fully charged. |

Lydia runs XP Pro in 192MB - well, "strolls" would be nearer the truth. Delivered an eee 1000 to a custard today, for her son what is off to uni. Very nice little chamine it is too, sorta handbag/big pocket size but a usable screen and keyboard. Also supplied a separate LCD monitor, wireless rodent and keyboard and outboard DVD box and disk box, for when it's in desktop mode. Lydia wants one, now. *sigh* |

Well, I intended the emphasis on "matched"; DDR can usually be installed as singletons but then you lose the dual-channel interface so memory access is slower. Looking at a mobo manual it seems DDR2 is the same, but I have a vague recollection that DDR3 must be installed in pairs, like RDRAM. |

I reseated them last night just after switching off and it's all there today. Must ask L how many attempts it took to boot today. I suspect the problem has been that it was unseated and randomly giving trouble on that account. And I know why it was unseated - the CPU fan makes a hideous noise (but spins fast enough to keep the CPU under 50degrees), and until I get a replacement I've been fixing that by giving the case a bit of percussive maintenance until it shuts up. Must have managed to knock the RAM loose! |
