Promises promises! Well at least they are against the turd runway.
"A third runway at Heathrow airport would be scrapped by a Tory government that would instead build a £20bn TGV-style high speed rail link between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. In one of David Cameron's boldest moves on the environment, the party will today unveil plans to cut 66,000 flights a year from Heathrow by tempting passengers on to the first new rail line north of London in more than a century. Theresa Villiers, the shadow transport secretary, told the Guardian last night: "This is a seriously green decision. A few years ago it would have been inconceivable for the leader of the Conservative party to say no to a third runway and putting the brakes on Heathrow expansion." The announcement, on the second day of the party's conference in Birmingham, is designed to show that the party has not abandoned its "Vote Blue, Go Green" agenda in the face of the economic downturn. Gordon Brown has warned that some Tory green plans would jeopardise economic development, but Cameron hopes to blunt any Labour attack by outlining detailed plans to tempt airline passengers on to the railways..." I would have to get to London to use it, which I suspect would mean that flying from Southampton would still be a quicker way to get to Leeds. Colin Bignell |

It just so happens there are more killer motorists than train drivers. |

Seems like a good idea to me, although I'm not sure it's going to remove enough flights from Heathrow (and Stansted, Luton, Gatwick) to make the third runway unnecessary. <checks> Yup, just under 500,000 "aircraft movements" at Heathrow last year - so it'll take just under 10% off. It won't even reduce the domestic journeys with most potential benefit - Edinburgh, Glasgow. And I can't wait to watch the tree-huggers in a dilemma when they find out how much infrastructure work would be needed - just look at their reaction over the (relatively minor) CTRL. |

No self-respecting anarchist would even read the Wail, let alone post stories from it on an almost daily basis. Given that Gollum is neither self-respecting (he is self-abusing, but that's not quite the same thing) nor an anarchist, however, his reliance on the Mail is not altogether surprising. |

Unless we cock things up in the way that modern day Britain seems uniquely placed to do, the new line will be available for trains to further north, including Scotland, to use for part of their journey thus accelerating them as well. Of course the British way will be to build it as a totally free standing operation with no link to those other "nasty train operators" from whom it could catch a disease. While we are at it, lets build it 5ft gauge to make sure. George |

Well, there IS the "Know thine enemy" angle - but that's unlikely given how often Duhg posts stories from it here. Mind you, the fact he's usually wailing for more legislation also points away from him being an anarchist. |
