He had a great deal of charm.

There's more to entertainment than clever.

If you're cold, hard, unperceptive ... and maybe a bit homophobic, then
he'll have had no appeal to you whatsoever.

That's why I said he's not funny or entertaining either.

If he's an example of what gays find entertaining, that's pretty sad.

David Baddiel's bit about him on newsbiscuit today just about summed it
up for me, I'm afraid:

Too true.

and his money was used to fuck up what was once a very nice riverside pub.

Danny was taken to the cleaners over that pub. It's a long story, but he
lost every penny he had on it and was forced to carry on working long after
he should have been retired. It was a sad end for a great performer and
industry stalwart.

He never appealed to gays - he was far too masculine. He was a man dressed
up as a woman, not a transvestite.

His audience was mostly families and a devoted following of old ladies.

I didn't know that. Poor sod!

It was one of many Upper Thames riverside pubs that were more or less exactly as
they were in the time of Three Men in a Boat, until they were taken over and
tarted up.

He didn't appeal to a lot of people.

A man dressed as a woman is one definition of a transvestite.

That'll be me, then - the "old ladies" bit. I wasn't _old_ when he
was in his heyday, though, and I still found him entertaining!

I should have said 'present company excepted'! ;-)

He had a wonderful way with an audience - very endearing. And although he
was not a great singer or comedian, his personality seemed to compensate for
it somehow. RIP Dan-Dan.
