Hope someone can help me here.
I'm going to be sorting out some friends' computer tomorrow. They are on BTinternet, and I was hoping someone could tell me they block port 25. They have an alternative email provider and want to use the smtp server provided by the third party. If BTinternet do, is there any alternative port that they can use to get round the block? Sorry if this has been asked before, I did Google but couldn't find anything relevant. Cheers Deddajay |

"They block port 25". There. I've done what you hoped! Is the problem sending, or receiving, mail? |

I gather BTinternet do not block port 25, so if my friends have the alternative provider's details, I should be able to set them up to send via the third party provider. If I've got it wrong, I'm sure someone will tell me. Cheers Deddajay |

The third party provider should be able to tell you what alternative ports they acknowledge. You might have to set up SMTP-AUTH though, or use SSL, or both. |

No ISP blocks outbound port 25..or you couldn't reach THEIR mail relays. If you cant send mail, it ain't much use as an ISP. If they only let you access their mail relay, well that's OK: Use it. They may possibly block incoming SMTP onto non fixed IP address domains tho. But that's what POP and IMAP are for.. |

Freeserve used to 'hijack' port 25 and any SMTP request would be forced on to their mail server and not the intended one. |

I have already changed an SMTP address for a customer. Both that ISP and BT used port 25 and it worked perfectly. |

I don't think anybody blocks Port 25 but some ISPs will only allow the sending of email if the 'from' address is one of their valid email addresses. I had to help several people set up email using a community email address, my notes say: Some ISPs may block access to third party SMTP servers as a SPAM prevention measure. If you find you cannot send email from your damerham.net account then you should change the SMTP server port in your email software from port 25 to port 587. This can be found under the Advanced tab in Outlook Express. It is also usually a good idea to tick the “My server requires authentication” box. The link I gave in my earlier post gives specific instructions for BT Yahoo. |

I've missed some of this so may be wide of the mark, but the bits I can
read I've taken the bloody liberty of adding some remarks too. Not to be rude or 'clever' just as a FYI: > >>I gather BTinternet do not block port 25, so if my friends have the >>alternative provider's details, I should be able to set them up to send >>via the third party provider. > > I don't think anybody blocks Port 25 but some ISPs will only allow the > sending of email if the 'from' address is one of their valid email > addresses. 1. Verizon do (but they are in the USA) 2. It is a bit more complex than offering a correct 'rcpt from'. There will be SASL at the least and possibly an IP based ACL to content with to relay out via an ISP mail server > > Some ISPs may block access to third party SMTP servers as a SPAM > prevention measure. That should read 'the majority of the world will block mail from a community server' if; a. It has an IP address that falls inside a dynamic range b. Has no PTR record in DNS or other dns irregularities c. Has hostname or protocol issues. Be very aware that with over 90% of email being junk, you can't just set up a server at home and hope it will work on a BTInternet Ip address. The good news is with a static IP in an properly allocated static IP range from BT, you can easily set something up with a little know how. However, should you start firing of mailing lists or other trash that is considered 'bulk' or 'unsolicited' the last of your worries will be the various block lists that snub you out. The issue will be BT terminating your account without warning. I watched a guy buy a mailing list program so he could do some 'marketing'. He managed to output just over 1000 messages. That's really lame for UCE. Of which about 8 made it into a server and I suspect most of those then fell into 'junk' folders. That afternoon BT Pulled the plug on him and held him to his contract term. Moral, be **VERY** careful with what you do as far as email goes in the UK. [..] |

Which BT certainly did, a few years ago (in other words, I'm not promising that they still do) This could be why OP wanted to use $OTHERISP's mail relay. I've set that up for someone with btinternet (because of the first-mentioned problem) and it worked fine. $OTHERISP's mail relay needed authentication, of course. |
