I'm visiting Scotland in a couple of weeks, travelling to Glasgow
Airport then onwards from Glasgow Central station.

What is the best (fsv: "best") way to get from Glasgow Airport to
Glasgow Central station? I don't have any time to waste (hence flying
to Glasgow rather than using the train) but I don't want to spend a
lot of money either.

With no time to waste surely you're best off travelling from Aylesbury
(assuming that's where you're coming from) into London, then doing the
beds to Glasgow Central?

Couple of options, Bus into Paisley, then train from Paisley Gilmour
Street to Glasgow, or, I think, bus direct to Glasgow city centre, then
find Central station. I'd imagine direct bus would be cheaper, but don't
know.

Once again you seek to impose your own lifestyle choices on others ...

On the basis of cost, rail doesn't work for me. My flight (one way)
will cost me £22.99 including all taxes. That doesn't pay more than a
small proportion of the overall train fare including sleeper berth,
the cheapest available for that night being £117.40 plus £49 for the
sleeper - and that's having to share a sleeper compartment. :-(

On the basis of time, rail doesn't work for me. I absolutely have to
be at home the night before my flight. The earliest practicable train
in the morning (dep AYS 05:35) would get me in to Glasgow Central at
12:01, which is a couple of hours too late as I have a long onward
journey. My flight from Luton arrives at Glasgow Airport at 08:20,
which is absolutely perfect.

On the basis of comfort, rail doesn't work for me. I cannot get a
good night's rest in a Mk 3 sleeper - I have used them quite a few
times, and always arrived tired and even more grumpy than usual. If
I was going to have to stay the night away from home, I would fly the
night before and stay in a hotel, which would also be cheaper than the
sleeper.

If I had the time I could travel by train the previous day and stay
the night in a hotel. However, I don't have the time, and the cost
would still be a lot higher than flying.

So it's thanks, but no thanks, and thank goodness for EasyJet. ;-)

Bruce, from personal experience I would suggest getting the direct bus from
Glasgow Airport - it stops at all major hotels and stations in Glasgow city
centre and the fare is very reasonable - though I don't recall exactly how
much.

Just find the information desk at the Airport and they'll direct you to the
bus stops right outside the arrivals area and tell you the service number
you require.

.... don't fly from Luton to Glasgow at all.

Tony would have to fly from Stansted, which is quite a bit further from
Aylesbury.

£4.50 for the 700 Service express coach. Stand 'A', if I remember
correctly. £4.50, about 15 minutes outside of peak hours.

There are 3 express bus services that serve Glasgow Airport. Only one
serves the Central Station. The 500 Arriva service runs mostly every
10 minutes, costs £5 and serves the City Centre, but not Central
station. Although not far away from it. The 747 First Bus also runs
from Glasgow Airport and serves Renfrew, Braehead and Partick on the
way to the City Centre £4 single. This runs every 30 minutes. It takes
the longest time to the City about 40 minutes. The First bus 757 is
the one which serves Central station and leaves every 30 minutes and
costs £4 single. It also serves the SECC and takes about 20
minutes.Times on http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/scotland/swscot/home/

On the other hand as has been suggested the Arriva 66 serves Paisley,
which is about 15 minutes away and then a train from Paisley Gilmour
Street will take 10 minutes to Central ststaion.

Sorry but as yet the works have yet to start on the Glasgow Airport
Rail Link. It has been held up whilst Network Rail makes its Signal
renewals between Paisley and Glasgow not expected to take place till
2011 now. Apparently the date cannot be changed or the line would have
opened in 2008.

You pays your money and takes your chance.

So booked well in advance then. What about parking, luggage fees and
coming back?

That part I can believe - such is the under- and over-pricing of
aviation and rail respectively.

But presumably you'll be out the door no later than 05:00 to make your
06:30 check in.

Presumably arriving at Glasgow bus station around 09:15.

Did you consider the 06:22 Milton Keynes to Glasgow (10:36)? A
pendolino yes, but with WiFi to make your journey time-effective.

Getting up at 04:00 and airport security have that effect on me.

Tomorrow's flight is currently selling at £80, if you want to compare
with a walk-up rail ticket. Parking at the station is about £5 a day,
but you have to add in the time taken for the shuttle bus - although if
you park on the airport there's also a bus to get (or a half mile trot).

>But presumably you'll be out the door no later than 05:00 to make your

Online check-in means there's only security to do. But I wouldn't want
to be arriving at security any later than 06.30.

Half an hour to park means leaving Aylesbury about 05.10, which is about
the time I leave home to catch a 06.45 flight to Amsterdam.
