Went to the gym this morning.

There is a row of about 10 stands outside that you can padlock bikes
to.

There were no bikes, but there were about 20 padlocks festooning the
stands.

Why do people leave their padlocks behind?

So they don't have to carry them on their next visit.

But there could be a bike padlocked already to 'your' stand.

<sigh>
Unlock padlock from current stand, containing strange bike.
Move padlock to different stand.
Secure own bike to this stand using padlock.

And you still haven't had to carry the padlock on the journey.

No, padlocks don't get left around here. It's just obvious common sense.

Just as well. It would have been awful for you to have to miss another
day of school.

This morning it was snowing on one side of the school but not on the
other.
We must be on the snowline.
