Why oh why oh why is it cheaper to buy stuff online from the US and
have it air-mailed, and then pay customs duty and VAT, than it is to buy it online in Europe? Perhaps I shouldn't take Levi's jeans as my example. |

It's a pain, isn't it? I've just ordered an ebook reader from the US, because even allowing for all that, it's cheaper than buying it from their UK arm (usual $->£ switch). |

Buy UK made stuff, then you can gloat at how much you saved over the USonians! |

Even some UK-made stuff is cheaper over there. Dunno if it's still the case, but at one time it was cheaper to buy a Jag in the US and ship it here than it was to just buy one. They charge what the market will bear, and for many years we've put up with it. |

Well, me too, apart from Sony CD and MD decks. But in a lot of cases, not. E.g. the ebook reader cited above. >> 2) not true. > >'tis for the HiFi stuff. Well, OK. We can still do cottage industries. |

Mind you, I don't buy very much new these days[0]. I got fed up, and broke, being an early adopter. It's so much cheaper & more reliable to trail somewhere aroubd 6-18 months behind the bleeding edge. 0] New boots & panties! |

Even the Sony MD deck was off eBay, and the CD deck (which I've had for Lo! these many years) was via a mate who at the time worked for Sony, and hence half price (still a fair wedge: it's the CDP557ESD, with the "Gibraltar" chassis- essentially filled with concrete - and has had the Trichord Clock 1 modification). Still sounds nice with the Meridian DAC (also pre-loved). |

Erm, it's pretty much exactly the same shape. Unless you believe there are companies out there building vast stockpiles of stuff they don't sell (car companies excepted, of course). |

I was guessing it had risen faster, with an increasing proprtion of our manufactured goods imported over recent decades. -- Richard |
